Awards Program

Each year, the Intelligent Community Forum presents an awards program for Intelligent Communities and the public-sector and private-sector partners who contribute to them.  The awards program has two goals: to salute the accomplishments of communities in developing inclusive prosperity on a foundation of information and communications technology, and to gather data for ICF's research programs.  See the event calendar for upcoming dates.

The process begins with communities filling out the ICF Awards Program Nominations Form. There is no cost for a community to submit a nomination. Communities that submit a nomination, in addition to being entered into consideration for ICF's Awards Program, will receive a free written report that compares their performance to ICF’s global data set in the areas of broadband infrastructure, the knowledge economy, innovation, digital equality, sustainability and advocacy for positive change. Nominations close in September each year. Learn more.

The Smart21
In the autumn, ICF announces its Smart21 Communities, an initial group of honorees that are semi-finalists for the Intelligent Community of the Year.  ICF develops the Smart21 list through independent research and review of questionnaires submitted by communities for the Intelligent Community Index. Communities are evaluated based on our Intelligent Community Indicators.

The Top7 Intelligent Communities
In February, ICF names seven of the Smart21 to its prestigious list of the Top7 Intelligent Communities of the Year, based on analysis of detailed information they provide.  The Top7 receive media coverage both locally and internationally, and become the finalists for ICF's Intelligent Community of the Year award.

Intelligent Community Visionary of the Year
The Visionary of the Year award is presented to an individual or an organization that has taken a leadership role in promoting broadband technology and applications as an essential utility in the Digital Age.  The winner must have a proven track record in bringing about cooperation between the public and private sectors, and must be recognized by peers as an expert in the field.

Intelligent Community of the Year
On the closing date of ICF's annual Summit, one of the Top7 is named as the Intelligent Community of the Year at an Awards ceremony.  The ceremony includes an address by the Intelligent Community Visionary of the Year.

      Founders Award
ICF's founders periodically present an award to an individual, application, organization or innovation within Intelligent Communities that is transforming life in the Broadband Economy for the common good.  The Founders Award  identifies best practices, sustained programs or inspiring initiatives and give them global recognition through ICF's Intelligent Community of the Year awards program.
