Hamilton is celebrating its biggest construction year in the city’s history.

“On Sept. 11, 2018, the City of Hamilton has, for the very first time, hit the billion dollar mark as early as September,” said Hamilton chief building official Ed VanderWindt.

Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Council has launched a pioneering online application allowing ratepayers to follow local developments in real time.

What’s believed to be the first council in Australia to allow ratepayers to track development applications on their mobile, Sunshine Coast says it also hopes to achieve efficiencies and operational savings through the tool.

A new fifth-generation mobile network is to be launched at the campus of the Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) at the end of 2018 to help companies and startups develop new services and business models.

The network will be launched by the university; the Nordic telecommunications corporation, Telia; and Ericsson, a telecom hardware provider, Telia announced in a statement.

QUEBEC CITY — Canadian biotech firm Medicago recently announced it has broken ground on a new commercial vaccine production facility in Quebec City.

The factory will come into operation in the winter of 2021 and the first doses of vaccines from the new plant are expected for the 2023 influenza season, said a Sept. 18 release.

And that is even more so during the annual Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC), from 12 to 15 November in that city. “It is the meeting place for companies, entrepreneurs, start-ups, cities and knowledge and research centres involved in smart cities”, says Johann Beelen, who is helping to enthuse a Dutch delegation for the conference on behalf of Brainport Development. This year this delegation will be led by the Eindhoven mayor John Jorritsma.

“Our goal is to present the offer and the added value of Dutch organisations and companies within the Smart City sector as concretely as possible”, says Johann Beelen. This is done along six different tracks:

Four students from Memorial Composite High School (MCHS) are $500 richer after completing an entrepreneurship program.

The four students — Josiah Schmidt, Patryk Szmuc, Jaden Klassen and Taylor Crossman — were each awarded a $500 cheque on Sept. 12 after taking part in the Community Futures Seeds for Success program. Seeds for Success takes place once a year for students at MCHS and provides them with $500 to start developing and implement a small business. If the students are successful, they receive an additional $500 at the end of the program.

OSHAWA, ONT. — Out of 16 metropolitan areas across Canada, the Conference Board of Canada forecasts the City of Oshawa, Ont.’s economic growth to be the highest in the country at 2.6 per cent.

Bolstered by a low unemployment rate, a growing population, relatively affordable housing and record levels of construction activity, 2018 is set to be another strong year for Oshawa, states a release issued by the city.
