City staff chart ‘smart city’ blueprint for Ottawa
Digital initiatives could soon be hitting Ottawa’s streets with the goal of turning the capital into a “smart city,” according to a report going before the city’s Finance and Economic Development Committee next week.
Smart city strategies have been gaining momentum worldwide, says the report prepared by city staff, and Ottawa is well-suited to build on its existing infrastructure in developing a connected city.

The regional event, which draws speakers and performers from all four of Riverside’s colleges and universities, and the city’s most innovative high-tech companies, runs from 5 p.m. to midnight on and around the Main Street mall in historic downtown Riverside.

Starting in the summer, Josh Taron, associate professor of architecture and co-director of the Laboratory for Integrative Design, and his team of students in the Faculty of Environmental Design devised, built and erected Furbaniture for Walk21 Calgary, an international conference on walkability taking place in this city this week.
The pieces, which are intentionally designed to be higher than a bench and lower than a table, can fit together in different ways to “re-program” a street or other urban outdoor spaces. They can be configured to create parklets on streets, extend outdoor patios off restaurants and bars, create a pop-up street festival or any other one of a myriad of creative uses yet to be dreamed up.
