How collaboration is turning investment into opportunity across Durham Region

Across Durham Region, infrastructure investment is creating new opportunities for workers, students and businesses. Home to five of Canada's Top 100 infrastructure and capital projects, the region is experiencing significant growth supported by collaboration among government, industry, educational institutions and community partners.

Major infrastructure, energy and education investments are creating new opportunities across Durham Region. What will determine the lasting impact of these investments is how effectively partners across industry, education, government and the community work together to connect them to talent development, innovation and business growth. Across the region, that work is already underway.

Home to five of Canada's Top 100 infrastructure and capital projects, more than $240 million in recent post-secondary investments, and one of Canda’s largest clean energy clusters, Durham Region is experiencing a period of growth that is creating new opportunities for residents, students, businesses and communities.

While these investments attract headlines because of their size, their true value lies in what they make possible. Across Durham Region, partners are connecting major projects with talent development, innovation, research and business growth. This collaborative approach helps ensure investments create lasting value for the community long after construction is complete.

For residents, this means access to skills training, career pathways and employment opportunities. For businesses, it means stronger supply chains, access to talent and opportunities to participate in growing industries. Together, these outcomes help build a more resilient, competitive and future-ready economy.

Major investments, lasting opportunity

With five of Canada's Top 100 infrastructure and capital projects located in Durham Region, billions of dollars are being invested in projects that will help shape the region’s future.

Renew Canada’s Top 100 list includes the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Refurbishment, ranked first nationally; the Darlington New Nuclear Project; and, the GO Transit expansion project. Together, these investments are strengthening Ontario's energy supply, transportation network and economic growth.

The Region of Durham is also investing in broadband, transit, water and wastewater infrastructure. These foundational services support housing growth, attract employers, and help connect residents to education, training and employment across the region.

While each project serves a different purpose, their combined impact extends far beyond construction. By aligning workforce development, business attraction and long-term planning, regional and community partners are helping to ensure these projects deliver lasting economic and social benefits.

Canada's Clean Energy cluster drives innovation

A significant share of this investment is taking place in Durham Region's energy sector. Recognizing a generational opportunity in the transition to a clean energy economy, Invest Durham and its partners identified future energy as a priority business cluster within the Ready Set Future: A PLACE Blueprint for Durham

The Darlington New Nuclear Project, led by Ontario Power Generation, is at the forefront of next-generation clean energy development. As the first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) under construction in the G7, the project is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.2 million homes when all four units are complete.

Beyond the energy it will produce, the project is creating opportunities for Canadian companies to participate in a growing domestic and international SMR supply chain. Partnerships among organizations, governments and educational institutions are helping develop the expertise, technologies and workforce needed to support the future of clean energy.

Investing in innovation and talent

Durham Region's post-secondary institutions play an important role in preparing the workforce, technologies and ideas that support economic growth. Through industry partnerships, applied research, experiential learning and innovation initiatives, Durham College, Ontario Tech University and Trent University Durham Greater Toronto Area are helping connect students and researchers with real-world opportunities.

Their success continues to attract investment. Recent provincial funding commitments totaling more than $240 million for Durham College and Ontario Tech University reflect their ability to deliver workforce-ready talent, industry-relevant research and innovation that supports local communities.

One of Durham Region's strengths is the close collaboration between education and industry. Employers, post-secondary institutions, school boards and community partners work together to align programs with changing labour market needs, create career-connected learning opportunities and support innovation.

For students and job seekers, these partnerships create more pathways from education to employment. For employers, they help ensure access to the talent needed to support growth in emerging sectors. From nuclear engineers and cybersecurity specialists to health-care professionals, skilled trades workers and entrepreneurs, these collaborations are helping prepare the workforce needed for the future economy.

Building a stronger future together

Durham Region's momentum is being shaped by more than major projects alone. By connecting infrastructure, clean energy, education and innovation, partners across the region are creating the conditions for sustained prosperity, stronger communities and long-term competitiveness.
